Every season I have a list of new shows to check out, although I rarely get to them all.  This season may be different.  Several new science fiction-oriented shows are on the agenda, and Sci Fi Chicks stands at the ready.

Seven New Sci Fi Shows to Check Out This Fall
(in no particular order)

[Caveat:  This list does not include shows I have no intention of watching; nor does it include shows set for a mid-season debut.]

1. Almost Human (Fox).  Two words: Karl Urban.  Two more words: Lili Taylor, one of Hollywood’s most underrated female actors. The show hasn’t received great reviews, but oftentimes a new series is panned in preview and then becomes a hit with viewers and critics.  (The Vampire Diaries and The Big Bang Theory come to mind.)  It  usually occurs when the stars are engaging, and these actors could fit that bill.
2. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  (ABC).  Oh c’mon, who isn’t looking forward to this series?
3. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (ABC). Since I’m lukewarm about Once Upon a Time, I wasn’t particularly interested in this show.  However, its preview is intriguing.  It appears to have beautiful special effects (something the original Once Upon.. lacks), and the story is unexpected, making me want to see more.
4. Sleepy Hollow (Fox).  Almost universally panned, I’m giving it a shot.  An out-of-his-element main character; an evil, unstoppable (and headless!) villain; and perhaps the end of the world.  What’s not to like?  Unlike some new shows that seem to have a limited plot line (e.g., Hostages and Crisis), there’s room for Sleepy Hollow to evolve.  Of course, it probably won’t be around long enough to do so.
5. Dracula (NBC).  Normally I’m not a fan of vampires, but we’re talking about the Big Mac Daddy vampire here.  The show is lush and visually stunning, and it stars Johnathan Rhys-Meyers (with an American accent, no less).  Definitely intriguing.
6. The Tomorrow People (the CW), with reservations.  I wasn’t planning on watching it, but it received some kudos at The Daily Beast.  One reviewer says it’s a blend of The X-Men and The Order of the Phoenix.  That’s pretty high praise, so I’m giving it a shot.
7. DreamWorks Dragons: Defenders of Berk (Cartoon Network).  Ok, it’s really the second season of DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk.  But it has a new title, so it counts.  (And I needed one more show to reach seven, since mid-season debuts don’t count.)
